هذا مثال رائع على براعة الناس في العصور القديمة. حيث جاءوا بفكرة استخدام الملاعق لتوقيت إطفاء الشمعة. يتم شحذ الطرف السفلي من الملعقة وتثبيته على الشمعة. وعندما تحترق الشمعة إلى النقطة المحددة ، تشتغل الآلية وتطفئ الشمعة.
