يُقال: وعَزَفَت نفسي عن الشيء تَعْزِفُ وتَعْزُف عَزْفاً وعُزُوفاً: تركَتْه بعد إعْجابها وزَهِدَتْ فيه وانْصرفت عنه ومعنى المثل: أن النفس تعتادُ ما عُوِّدَتْ، إن زهدتَّها في شيء زَهَدَت، وإن رَغَّبْتها رَغَبَت. قال أبو ذؤيب الهذلي:
والنفسُ راغبَةٌ إذا رغّبتها ** وإذا تُرَدُّ إِلى قَلِيلٍ تَقنَعُ
