يقول الله في سورة آل عمران: {وَلَا تَهِنُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنْتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ (139) إِنْ يَمْسَسْكُمْ قَرْحٌ فَقَدْ مَسَّ الْقَوْمَ قَرْحٌ مِثْلُهُ وَتِلْكَ الْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَيَتَّخِذَ مِنْكُمْ شُهَدَاءَ وَاللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الظَّالِمِينَ (140) وَلِيُمَحِّصَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَيَمْحَقَ الْكَافِرِينَ (141) أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَنْ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا مِنْكُمْ وَيَعْلَمَ الصَّابِرِينَ} [آل عمران: 139، 142]
استشهد في هذه الغزوة حمزة بن عبد المطلب، وعمرو بن الجموح، وعبد الله بن عمرو بن حرام، ومصعب بن عمير، وعبد الله بن جحش، وحنظلة.
عند انتهاء المعركة نزل الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام من فوق الجبل ليتفقد الشهداء، وكان موقفًا مريعًا، سبعون شهيدًا من أفاضل المسلمين، كان منهم: حمزة بن عبد المطلب، وعمرو بن الجموح، وعبد الله بن عمرو بن حرام، ومصعب بن عمير، وعبد الله بن جحش، وحنظلة، فأمر صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يدفنوا بثيابهم في أرض أحد دون أن يغسلوا أو يكفنوا، فكان صلى الله عليه وسلم يدفن الاثنين والثلاثة في القبر الواحد، ويجمع بين الرجلين أحيانًا في ثوب واحد، وقد أنزل الله تعالى في هذه المعركة عدة آيات يضمد بها جراح المؤمنين، وينبههم إلى سبب الهزيمة التي حلت بهم،
